Telephone Befriending

The Telephone Befriending Service reaches out to older, isolated, lonely people to promote independence and well being, to help those in need to improve their quality of life.

The service, which was set up in 2004 and covers Sutton Coldfield and Erdington, is extremely popular with over 120 clients receiving a call every week to have a friendly chat and to share any worries, as they often do. As they say "It's good to talk" and quite often our service users will say they feel so much better at the end of a call from one of our Telephone Befrienders.

ACB has a number of dedicated volunteers who are based at ACB's Boldmere office. They come in every week to help man the phones and find the work very rewarding.

The project aims to provide information on local community groups i.e. coffee mornings, luncheon clubs etc. so our service users can make an independent choice to be part of a group. As it is a rolling service, the clients come and go according to their personal needs and it is important to gradually introduce outside interests so they can become more actively included in community life.

The Future
The aim for the future is to continue to increase the number of service users and volunteers so that more needy people can benefit from the contact. This is a crucial line of support to isolated people and we look to extend the service to other areas.
